WILMINGTON RENAISSANCE CORPORATION

Kalmar Races

For the past two years, WRC has added to the excitement on the riverfront with the Kalmar Races. The corporate crew team challenge on the Christina River will return this year--twice!

With such success in the past, WRC and RDC have decided to bring the races to the river on both Wednesday, June 25 and Wednesday, August 20.

Teams of eight corporate employees with no rowing experience will be trained by Wilmington Youth Rowing Association (WYRA) coaches for about four weeks leading up to the races. The races are great team-building experiences, give the winners bragging rights and a trophy for a year, and include a spectator party on the riverfront with music, food and more.

Seven teams are already committed to the first race on June 25. Entry to the races is $1,000. Any proceeds from the event will benefit the WYRA.

WYRA is a 501 (c)(3) not for profit organization that offers a variety of recreational and competitive rowing programs to youngsters from Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania.

Our 17,000sq. ft boathouse, also home to the University of Delaware crew, is located at 500 E. Front St. on the Christina River, a block and a half past the Wilmington Train Station and only minutes from I-95 and I-495.

WYRA uses the sport of rowing to teach responsibility, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork as a means of helping youth raise their self-esteem and to prepare them to withstand the pressures facing youth today.

WYRA offers competitive crew in the fall and spring; winter conditioning in our weight room, indoor rowing tanks, and our ergometer room for those participating in fall and/or spring crew; summer rowing camps; and WYPERS, recreational rowing for adults during the summer - all at the WYRA boathouse.

Youth rowing programs have been created for inner city children and special needs children as well.
